2.1 Traction Adding Devices (TADs)
In a stock open differential, power is normally transferred to both
wheels through the differential. When a slippery surface is encountered,
such as ice or mud, power will be transferred to whichever tire has
the least traction. A Traction Adding Device in one or both differentials
addresses this shortcoming off-road with varying degrees of impact on
street driving characteristics. A TAD can often be the one deciding
factor on whether a truck can make it through a trail or not, which
is why they are so common. With the explosion in the Samurai's popularity,
there are many options available.
