2.5 Vent breather extensions
For water crossings, many four-wheelers find that the breathers for
the axles, transmission, transfer case, and steering box are too low.
Even though the stock breather vents have 1-way valves, when the hot
gearboxes get submerged in cold water the contraction can suck water
in through the seals. Popping the breathers off with a screwdriver and
installing vent tubes up high in the engine bay can help prevent water
from getting in the gear oil. Use around 15 feet of 1/2-inch ID flexible
tubing and some hose clamps, making sure that there is enough slack
for full axle articulation.
