4.4 Choose the right shocks
In pursuit of increased articulation, oftentimes the overlooked limiting
factor is the length of the shock absorbers. Too long of a shock limits
compression, and too short of a shock can limit droop. This can lead
to shock damage and over-extension of the stock brake lines. Longer
brake lines can be installed, but new upper and lower shock mounts may
be required to fit shocks for increased articulation or suspension height.
Take measurements of the distance between the shock mounts with the
wheels compressed and extended with the old shocks disconnected, and
find a set of shocks that meet those dimensions. Watch that you don't
over-extend the brake lines! If you can't find long enough shocks for
the stock shock mounts, look into installing extended shock mounts or
at least bumpstops to protect the shocks from damage.
