Installing the GotZuk Doorless Mirror Brackets

By Figmo

If you're like most folks I know, chances are one of the first mods you've done to your Samurai when you got it home was cut the door hinges to make your doors removeable. And why not, it's cheap (like FREE), it's great for offroad driving (nice being able to easily see your tire placement) and plus it just looks cool driving down the road on a bright summer's day.

The only drawback to this mod is, the stock Samurai side mirrors are monted on the doors so when you take your doors off - you no longer have side mirrors. This can be dangerous and depending on where you live, illegal (as a kind highway patrolman explained to me...in writing)

Well, GotZuk has come up with an inexpensive kit to allow you to relocate your stock mirrors to the front of the door hinge. The kit comes complete with everything you need including brackets, all mounting bolts/screws and illustrated instructions.

"How do I remove those #&%$ stock door screws?"

If you haven't yet had the pleasure of attempting to remove the stock door screws from a Samurai, you will quickly learn that they are sealed in place with a loc-tite type substance at the factory. This makes them VERY hard to remove.

There are about as many ways to get these suckas out as there are people who tried it. The thing to keep in mind is that these screws are only hard to remove so long as there is tension on the head. This means that once you get it to turn just a half a turn out - you can usually finish it off with a normal screwdriver or even your fingers.

1. Try a good pair of vice grips. This does not always work but it works about 50% of the time and is by far the easiest so it's always worth a shot. If you can get just enough of a grip on the head of the screw to break it free - you can go the rest of the way with a screwdriver. If you can grind a flat spot on each side of the head this trick works better.

2. Hammer and chisel. Chisel a slot in the head of the screw so you can whack it sideways in the direction it needs to turn to remove (counter clockwise).

3. An air impact gun or an impact driver. You can pick up an impact driver from JC Whitney or Sears or any good tool supply. Make sure you use a #4 screwdriver bit.

4. Still having trouble? Try the final solution - drill the head off the screw. Drill through the center of screw until the head pops off leaving just the stud sticking out. You can then grab the stud with a pair of vice grips and it should turn right out.

With alot of perserverence and alittle luck, you should be able to get them all out. Once you do, replace all of them with hex head bolts so you wont have to worry about this problem ever again.

Good luck,

Installation of this kit is a walk in the park. Start by removing the 2 factory Phillips head screws from the front half of your upper door hinge on each side. Don't worry about destroying these - the GotZuk kit includes new (longer) hex head bolts and washers to replace these. See the sidebar article on this page for tips on removing the stock door hinge screws.
Now remove your stock mirrors from the doors themselves. There is a plastic cover that is hinged at the bottom and just pops loose from the top with a small screwdriver. Remove this to reveal the 3 Phillips head screws that hold the mirror to the door. The GotZuk kit includes new machine screws to replace these so you don't need to save them. But save the plastic cover as you will reuse this when re-mounting the mirrors to the brackets.

Now install the new GotZuk brackets to the front half of your upper door hinge on each side. The kit includes hex head bolts and washers to replace the stock Phillips head screws that used to go here.

Finally, install your stock mirrors to the GotZuk bracket using the included allen head machine screws. Flip up the plastic cover and snap it an place and TADA -- you're done!

Here's what "Figmo's Folly" looks like after installing this kit. The whole installation took me about 30 minutes to complete and required no special tools.
