Fall Crawl
October, 2004
Every year about this time, The "Creeping Lugs"
4X4 club of Montana hosts a Trials competition. This year, it was
held outside the small community of Lozeau in Western Montana.
For those of you who have never seen or participated
in a Trials competition, it is a technical challenge of both driver
and machine. Basically, the organizers lay out an obstacle course
outlined by flags. The goal is to negotiate the course while incurring
the fewest penalty points. Penalty points are given for things like
hitting a flag, lack of forward momentum, excessive tire spin, backing
up or assisted recoveries.
Eighteen vehicles competed in this years event including
"The Animal", a 1988 Suzuki Samurai that was Team Roadless
Gear's entry in the competition. Here is a quick rundown on the specs
for this vehicle for those interested: Suspension is a 4" BDS
Lift (Spring Under Axle), Lock Right locker in rear, ARB air locker
up front, stock R&P gears but 6.4:1 gears in the T-Case. The engine
is the stock 1.3L with a Thorly header, PowerCam 260 and Weber carb
perched atop a Hi-Flow intake.
As with many of these types of competitions, you often wonder as
you navigate the course if the organizers are secretly sadists in
another life. It seems they just about always place the flags
in such a manner as to prevent you from making that turn
or getting down that hill without rolling.
Thankfully, due in no small part to the skill of all
of the drivers, there was very little carnage at this years events.
Though we were told that this was considered unusual. The scores were
very close but we are proud to announce that at the end of the day,
Team Roadless Gear emerged victorious and took 1st place.
We want to thank the Creeping Lugs for hosting this
competition and for allowing everybody - drivers and spectators alike
to spend a day having some good wholesome family fun.
